Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, describes vinyl flooring in plank form, commonly with a wood-look design. LVT means luxury vinyl tile and is also used as a broader product label. Vinyl flooring is a wider category that can include sheet goods. When comparing options, look at the actual product format instead of relying on the abbreviation alone.

A typical plank combines a backing or attached pad, a core or body, a printed design and a protective surface. Each layer has a different job. The wear layer helps protect the design; the core and locking system affect the floor assembly. A specification such as 6 mm overall thickness and 22 mil wear layer describes two separate measurements.

Rigid-core flooring and flexible glue-down vinyl are different systems. SPC can be worth comparing for a click installation, while a dryback product is designed to be bonded to a prepared surface. Neither construction removes the need to check the room, substrate and installation instructions.

Read the wear-layer number alongside the manufacturer’s residential or commercial use classification. The number measures thickness, not scratch hardness or resistance to every kind of damage. A thicker wear layer can provide more material above the printed design, but the surface finish and complete product specification also affect performance.

For a bedroom, compare everyday comfort, appearance and the product’s residential warranty. For a busy family room or rental, also review cleaning, furniture protection and how a damaged plank would be replaced. For a business, check the actual commercial-use warranty and the expected rolling loads, traffic and maintenance routine.

If you are comparing 12, 20, 22 or 30 mil products, keep the units consistent. A 30 mil wear layer is not a 30 mm plank, and it does not promise a particular number of years. Ask what the warranty covers, what it excludes and whether it applies to your use of the space.

A click-lock floor joins at the edges and is usually installed as a floating assembly. Plan the required perimeter gaps, doorway transitions, maximum uninterrupted area and treatment around fixed cabinets or islands from its instructions. Adhesive-backed vinyl plank is a third option. VacuuBond uses a factory-applied bonding system, so it should not be treated as ordinary dryback flooring or a click product. Check the exact option’s approved surfaces and instructions before planning an overlay over an existing floor.

Compare the whole project cost: flooring quantity, removal, preparation, adhesive or approved underlayment, trim and labor. The least expensive box does not necessarily produce the lowest installed project cost.

Waterproof LVP is often considered for kitchens, dining areas and connected living spaces because shoppers want a wood look with straightforward spill care. Check that the exact product is approved for the room and understand what its waterproof claim covers. Water resistance in the plank does not turn seams, walls or the subfloor into a waterproof room.

Clean up spills promptly and follow the chosen product’s care instructions. Bathrooms, laundry areas and locations exposed to plumbing leaks need closer review of perimeter details and warranty conditions. For a concrete slab, the required moisture checks still matter even in the dry Las Vegas climate.

Consider sunlight and temperature as well as water. Tell us about large sunny windows, seasonal occupancy or rooms without regular climate control. Use the manufacturer’s temperature limits and care guidance when deciding whether that floor fits the space.
